Telnet

This is probably the earliest Internet connection.  It is still available today but is slow and ponderous.  Telnet is a way to log in to someone's computer directly as if you are located at the host computer terminal.  It is a way to use computer resources from a distance.  The most frequently used telnet experience is to log into university and college libraries to check resources.  The Library of Congress telnet is also very active.

To telnet you must know the address of the computer that you wish to use.  Type in the browser

telnet://telnet.loc.gov

If the host computer allows public access, you will be able to use the computer facilities as if you actually sat at a computer in the Library of Congress.
