Integrating Computer Technology into the Classroom:

Design and Management

Class Description:

This course, for computer literate teachers, is designed to combine principles of instructional design with skills for technology integration. The course will focus on five key areas: the teacher, the student, the technology, the lesson, and the classroom environment. Current research models for planning and technology integration will be explored and practical ideas for implementing these models will be discussed. The course will be approximately 60% lecture/ discussion and 40% hands on. The hands-on component will provide teachers with opportunities to use and explore existing hardware, software and Internet resources in order to incorporate them into the design process. Each teacher will be expected to use course information to design an instructional unit that effectively integrates technology as a tool for enhancing the learning environment.

Goal:

This course is designed to equip teachers with knowledge and skills for designing exemplary units of instruction, which effectively integrate the power of instructional technology in order to enhance the learning environment.

Objectives:

Participants will research and discuss future trends in technology and expand their vision of the learning environment and individual learning styles.

• Participants will research and discuss managing change with new technologies

• Participants will develop a strong understanding of the Virginia Technology Standards of Learning and other national technology standards. (Ex. AECT, ACA, ISTE)

• Participants will research and discuss effective planning models appropriate for classroom use and apply these models for "planning for technology."

• Participants will research and discuss effective classroom technology models

• Models for individual student use of technology

• Models for small group student use of technology

• Models for large group student use of technology

• Participants will explore applications of technology as a tool for instruction

• A tool for research

• A tool for communication/presentation

• A tool for data analysis

• A tool for simulations

• A tool for problem solving

• Participants will explore Internet resources for planning, designing, and implementing technology.

• Participants will explore strategies for designing effective instruction

• Participants will identify technology resources in their own school and develop strategies for utilizing these resources

 • Participants will explore the concept of "'project based learning'

• Participants will combine knowledge of planning models, technology models, instructional design and available resources to design, implement, and evaluate a unit of instruction that effectively integrates technology to enhance the learning environment.

Evaluation:

Successful completion of this course includes the following:

• Attendance and participation (20%)

• Completion of weekly research journal entries (20%)

• Design and classroom implementation of an instructional unit effectively integrating technology in order to enhance the learning environment (50%)

• Presentation of design project (5%)

• Peer evaluation of completed design projects (5%)
